About Jazz Roots Backstage
With Jazz Roots Backstage, photographer and publisher Daniel Azoulay documents four seasons of JAZZ ROOTS, a series of jazz concerts produced by his friend, the musician, producer and entrepreneur Larry Rosen. Rosenís knowledge of the music, combined with his distinct conceptual approach to production, required a special photographer to capture and communicate the spirit of these events.
To bring the viewer closer to the artistic process, Azoulay decided to photograph each event sequentially ó from the early backstage preparations and the afternoon's sound check, to the peaks of the evening's performance.
Using a cinematic approach, Azoulay captured multiple frames close in action, thus revealing in his images extraordinary details of the artists in their music-making process, playing and singing as well as interacting with their fellow musicians and the audience.
A selection of these images has been collected in Jazz Masters, an exceptional book of photography by Daniel Azoulay that chronicles a visual journey commemorating four seasons of the JAZZ ROOTS series at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in Miami, Fla.
The Jazz Roots Backstage project continues this journey, as it follows the music series to the Dallas Center for the Performing Arts; The Palladium Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel, Indiana; The Smith Center for the Performing Arts in Las Vegas; and the Cobb Energy Performing Art Centre in Atlanta.
